The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. After decades of waiting, they were finally standing on the edge of the Promised Land.
The journey was almost over.
The promise was right in front of them.
And then they were stopped by a flooded river.
“It was harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge, the water above that point began backing up… and the whole nation of Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.” (Joshua 3:15, 17)
Can you imagine being one of those priests?
“Wait… You want us to do what?”
The Jordan wasn’t calm and shallow. It was overflowing its banks. The water was rushing. The risk was real.
Yet God didn’t stop the river before they started walking.
The water didn’t part while they stood safely on the shore.
The miracle came after they took the first step.
Can you imagine placing your foot into that rushing water? Taking another step when nothing had changed yet? Trusting God before you saw any evidence that He was about to move?
That’s faith.
Sometimes we want God to show us the entire plan before we’re willing to move. We want certainty before obedience. We want the river to part before we step forward.
But often God asks us to trust Him enough to take the next step first.
Maybe your “Jordan River” is a difficult conversation.
Maybe it’s starting the business.
Maybe it’s applying for the job.
Maybe it’s ending the unhealthy relationship.
Maybe it’s saying yes to something God has been nudging you toward for a long time.
Maybe it’s simply taking the next faithful step when you can’t see the outcome.
The priests didn’t know exactly how God was going to make a way.
They simply knew He had told them to move forward.
And when they obeyed, God did what only He could do.
Don’t let fear keep you standing on the shoreline.
Don’t let the unknown convince you to turn around.
Don’t let a flooding river make you forget God’s promises.
Move forward. Take the step.
“We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. Let Your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in You alone.”
Psalm 33:20-22
